Cork is the outer bark of the cork oak tree (Quercus suber L.). 100 percent natural, reusable and recyclable, cork is, whether from the environmental, social or economic perspectives, one of the world's most versatile materials.
Corky bark covers the trunk and major limbs of the tree. The spongy bark of mature trees is used to make wine bottle corks, cork flooring, and other items. The cork is harvested when the tree reaches 30 to 40 years of age and then every 9-11 years for up to 12 times within its lifetime.
Cork has no harmful effects on humans, so if you accidentally got some bits in your wine, there's no need to worry. It's a slow-combustion material, meaning that it doesn't produce flame while burning, and the burning doesn't spread. The smoke it releases while burning is also not toxic.
