Channa punctata
Channa punctata is a relatively small Snakehead species (maximun 35 cm), that is not overly aggressive. It is native to Afghanistan (Kabul river) to Indus river, Pakistan, South Nepal and Inda. There is confusion about the exact distribution area. Observations of Channa punctata in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar have occured, but probably these were cases of misidentification.
The range of distribution of Channa punctata stretches over tropical and subptropical areas. The fish should be kept accordingly. In subtropical areas in winter temperatures drop als low as 16 degrees C, while summer it raises to 22-28 degrees C (keep lower then this maximum). Is the origin of a specimen unknown, than probably a temperature between 22-24 degrees is best.
Channa punctata is often available in the trade. Reports are that this species is moderate aggressive tot conspecifics. Reports about combining with other species vary. Often Channa punctata seem to choke in fish that are too large to swallow. Fast, robust an larger other fish are advisable.
A dim-lighted aquarium with dense planted area, open swimming places and with a lot of place to shelter. Use a tighly fitting hood since channa species are true escape artists. A gap between the waters surface and the hood is needed since they need to breath from the surface.

Carnivorous. All kind of living fishfood is accepted like artemia, bloodworm, mosquito larvae, shrimps, insects, snails and especially earthworm. Often, (pieces of) fish are refused. Frozen and dried pallets are accepted.
