The Spot Cheeck Cichlid is a Medium sized Central American fish from the slow-moving waters of the lower and middle river valleys of the Rio Papaloapan basin of eastern Mexico. They are typically found in groups, over sandy substrates with driftwood and leaf litter that they use for cover. They are similar to the Firemouth Cichlid and will sift the substrate in search of food items. Good cover should be provided with driftwood and smooth rocks with some open swimming/sifting space. They shouldn't bother plants in a planted tank. A high nitrate level makes them more prone to health problems, and should be avoided. They can be territorial when breeding. Pairs will reproduce in smaller aquariums making them a good choice for smaller tanks. Can be housed with robust livebearers such as swordtails or even rainbowfish.
