The Heckel's Geophagus (Geophagus heckelii), also known as Threadfin Geophagus or Threadfin Eartheater, is a beautiful and popular cichlid species native to the Amazon River basin in South America. It is named after Johann Jakob Heckel, an Austrian ichthyologist who first described the species.

Heckel's Geophagus is known for its distinctive thread-like extensions on the dorsal and anal fins, which give it a unique and elegant appearance. The body of this species is typically golden-brown to beige with darker vertical bars running along its sides. The colors can intensify and vary depending on the mood and environment of the fish.

In terms of size, Heckel's Geophagus is a relatively large cichlid, reaching lengths of around 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) in captivity. It has an elongated and laterally compressed body shape, with a sloping forehead and a mouth positioned towards the bottom of its head.

Creating a suitable habitat for Heckel's Geophagus in the aquarium involves replicating its natural environment. They prefer a sandy substrate with scattered rocks, driftwood, and plenty of hiding places. Adding plants, such as Amazon swords and Vallisneria, can help create a more natural setting and provide additional cover.

When it comes to temperament, Heckel's Geophagus is generally peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful fish species. However, during breeding and territorial disputes, aggression may arise, especially between males. Providing ample space and creating territories with the use of rocks and caves can help mitigate potential conflicts.
