Leucobryum glaucum, also known as pincushion moss or cushion moss, is a moss that forms dense, pillow-like mounds. It has whitish-green leaves and upright stems.
Appearance
- Leaves are long, thick, and tubular at the base
- Leaves are un-toothed and tapered at the ends
- Leaves are largely made up of the central nerve or "costa"
- Leaves are longer and broader at the bottom than at the top
- Hummocks are glaucous green when wet and greenish white when dry
Size
- Individual plants are small, usually reaching 2–6 inches in height and 8–24 inches in spread
- Hummocks can form to 50 cm high and 1 m across
Habitat
- Native to Eastern North America and Europe
- Thrives in both deciduous and coniferous forests
- Prefers shaded, moist environments but can also be found in drier, well-drained habitats
